What's the Impact of Tariffs?

With the almost daily news about tariffs, it can be confusing to separate fact from fiction. The reality is that tariffs will have an impact; but by what amount is difficult to predict based on the numerous factors involved.

However, at Bill McCandless Ford of Mercer we strive to be the partner our commercial vehicle customers want and need in this time of uncertainty. That’s why we’ve included this page on our site to help our customers better understand the expected impact of tariffs.

  • Will prices rise? Unfortunately, the answer is yes, although it is almost impossible to predict how much of an increase we’ll see - and this same type of price increase applies to many, many other goods as well that we all use in our daily lives.
  • Will inventory levels be impacted? Again, the answer here is also yes. Due to the nature of where products are produced, there will be certain makes and models that experience diminished production levels as a result of decisions the manufacturers of our vehicles will have to make.
  • Can vehicles be produced elsewhere to reduce the impact of tariffs? Yes, vehicle manufacturers can indeed shift production to other domestic plants, but this shift will take time. It’s not an easy undertaking to move production, or predict the time needed to do so.

What can our customers do today to reduce the impact of tariffs to their bottom line?

If you’re in the market for a new work truck or van for your business, or you expect to be in the near future, consider moving your purchase timeline up. By doing so, you can likely select from pre-tariff vehicle inventory currently on our lot, or place an order at the early stage of the situation.

If you need service for your fleet, look at scheduling that sooner rather than later. Not only do tariffs impact new vehicles, they will impact parts as well, and possibly the line in the service lane.
